Professional Development

The Union School District has district memberships in ASCD, NSDC, & SMCAA. What do these acronyms stand for? We went to the website for each organization to get these answers, in their own words.

ASCD - Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development We address all aspects of effective teaching and learning—such as professional development, educational leadership, and capacity building. ASCD offers broad, multiple perspectives— across all education professions—in reporting key policies and practices. Because we represent all educators, we are able to focus solely on professional practice within the context of "Is it good for the children?" rather than what is reflective of a specific educator role. In short, ASCD reflects the conscience and content of education.

NSCD - The National Staff Development Council is committed to ensuring success for all students through staff developpment and school improvement. Our goal is that all teachers in all schools will experience high-quality professional learning as part of their daily work by 2007.

SMCAA - The Show-Me Curriculum Administrators Association will provide support to member school districts for the development, implementation, and evaluation of local curriculum which is aligned to the Missouri Show-Me Standards and that results in enhanced student achievement.

The Union R-XI School District Calendar Committee and the Professional Development Committee have worked together with the administration in developing an alternative to dismissing students early to provide professional development for the certified staff of the district. There will be no early release days to provide professional development for the staff.

Teacher Professional Lending Library
